Vamos a la playa!

After 11 hours on a windy road we ended up not quite where we had planned...but then exactly where we wanted to be, a quiet, cosy yet wild beach, relaxing, swimming, more margarita´s and speaking very bad spanish in San Augustanillo.....next stop; Guatemala!

¿Oaxappened? (Wha happened in Oaxaca)

Upon our arrival in Oaxaca (pronounced wha Harka), we were showered with flower petal confetti from the balcony of amigas de Alice Springs, Australia, la guapas Ilse and Mel. Entering our hotel we were greeted with jovial ¨felezidades¨ for our marriage and ¨la luna de miel¨ (honeymoon) from the family of the hostel.  Our room was complete with an alter of flowers and chocolate skulls and colourful decorations put together by Ilse & Mel.

....and so the adventures with our friends in Oaxaca began. (with beautiful pics from Ilse)

We went out onto the street of Oaxaca, to celebrate the ¨Mexican Day Of The Dead,¨ into a colourful crowd, full of skeletons, monsters, diablos (devils), brides, etc. There were brass bands, street performers, clowns, parades and more.

We even joined in on a street performance with a clown in front of a huge crowd in the main square.  We didn't understand enough language to work out what was going on the whole time, but we still gained laughs and applause from the crowd.

The rest of our days in Oaxaca were spent in markets, cafes, restaurants and bars, drinking margaritas, dancing and catching up with our friends, ironically getting to spend more time with them in Mexico than Australia.

Our time in Oaxaca also included one mad trip in a hire car up a ridiculously steep mountain to arrive at a petrified waterfall and the most picturesque mineral rich pools to swim in.

On the way back our car lost power (possibly a cylinder gone?) and we went the wrong way, but after many hours we managed to crawl back to our hostel.

This trip tired us out, so now we are off to the beach for some down time. Adios sweet Amigas! Vamos a la playa!!

Married in México!

After living it up in Vegas after our wedding (we got married!) we hit the road again and had a look at the Grand Canyon, and yep, it's a big un.

After 4 hours of checking out the south rim (apparently 6 hours is the average stay) we headed for Flagstaff, where we ended joining a Halloween party. They really go all out with their costumes. Met some lovely locals as well as some other travelers, and had a great night, ending up at a bar that had a local reggae band playing.  And of course we couldn't help but pull some circus move on the dance floor.

With a slight hangover the next morn, it was back onto the wrong side of the road, this time heading down a canyon to Sedona, a touristy town situated in an amazingly beautiful place. It's what we imagined Arizona to be like and more.  I think we enjoyed the landscape more than the grand canyon.

Well, it was time to say goodbye to the USA, so we headed to LA via Phoenix, with all it's giant cacti (also what we expected of Arizona).

A short flight later and we're in México City at 5am! After a much needed sleep in a hotel we set out to find Frida Kahlo's house, Casa Azul. The Metro system in MC is excellent, although very crowded. Casa Azul was much bigger than we imagined, and a beautiful museum of her work and personal effects.

After a beautiful meal at a quaint little "meson" (we love Mexican food!) we headed for the central plaza, where there were hundreds of beautiful and creepy parade floats displayed, ready for the Dia de los Muertos. Tiny delicious tacos at a market near our hotel to finish the day. What an amazing day!
